Cocaine In The Classroom

Robin Lyons BlogBLOG POST #181: This week, I’m sharing research on a specific crime involving a young high school English teacher.

You may remember seeing the video on the news. In the morning, students, from outside the classroom, recorded the teacher alone in her classroom doing drugs. Students alerted the principal and posted the video on social media which was widely viewed.

The local police were called and arrived to investigate late the same morning. A police officer walked the 24-year-old teacher out of the school in handcuffs. Students also recorded her leaving the school and posted this on social media as well.

During the investigation, the police learned the teacher had purchased cocaine on her way to school. She admitted she “snorted” some of the cocaine while in her locked classroom.

She resigned from her teaching position and nine months after her arrest, the teacher pleaded guilty to possession of cocaine—a level six felony—in exchange for a lighter sentence.

The judge sentenced her to one year of probation and required the ex-teacher to provide the court with documentation she was participating in a drug treatment program. After six months, she would be permitted to petition the court to lower her conviction to a Class A misdemeanor.
