High School Teammate Bully

Posts about real school tragedy, crime and/or events can be upsetting.

Robin Lyons BlogBLOG POST #164: This week, I’m sharing research on a specific criminal case involving high school boys on the football team. (Helpful resources at the bottom)

This case resulted from an investigation at the high school for an unrelated incident.

Disgusting Behavior

The bully told the victim to pick up the football when he refused the bully put the victim in a “10 candy bar game” position (victim on their back, bully sitting on the victim’s chest pinning his arms down with the bully’s knees, then the victim is repeatedly thumped on their forehead). While in the game position, the bully allegedly hit the victim and rubbed his genitals against the boy.

Plea Agreement

Resulting from the investigation, the bully was initially indicted on charges of gross sexual imposition, child endangering, menacing by stalking and unlawful restraint.

The bully pleaded guilty to a lesser charge of retaliation.

The judge sentenced him to 30 days in the county jail and 100 hours of community service. He was also ordered to write letters of apology to the team. The judge then banned him from school property during his three years on probation and barred him from contact with the victim.

Broken Promises

Worth Mentioning: In response to this case, the school district vowed to implement—“22 Strong”—a program designed to emphasize the importance of respecting each other and other community values by students participating in extracurricular activities. Sadly, it’s been close to a year, and there is little evidence of the program on the school’s website, in their blog posts, or board policies.
