Robin Lyons BlogBLOG POST #197: This week, I’m sharing research on a specific crime involving a middle school special education teacher.

As the school year ended that year, the wife (second marriage), mother, and head of the middle school special education department found herself embroiled in her husband’s arrest case.

Love Struck

He was a Brazilian native, bodybuilder, and ten years younger than his wife. Typically the difference between a husband’s and wife’s ages wouldn’t be a factor in a criminal case, but it became part of the teacher’s defense.

A school is a finely tuned machine, running on less and less funding. Everyone has a job to do, and if there’s spare time, then chances are good that position will see the hours cut in the next school year.

The 40-something custodian, in this case, had way too much free time or wasn’t doing a very good job. What he did make time for was to set up an explosion-prone “one-pot” methamphetamine lab in a storage area on the K-12 campus with approximately 1,000 students in high school, middle school, and elementary grades.

The local police were called and arrived to investigate late the same morning. A police officer walked the 24-year-old teacher out of the school in handcuffs. Students also recorded her leaving the school and posted this on social media as well.

BLOG POST #171: This week, I’m sharing research on a specific crime that occurred a few years ago involving a high school Dean of Academy and a 17-year-old student.

New Job

The 50-something man was selected from a pool of about 50 applicants and had been with the high school serving as the Dean of Academy and family outreach coordinator for two months.

The newly hired Dean of Academy was known as a community organizer and youth minister in the area for decades nicknamed ‘Rev,’ a familiar face, often worked with police and helped gang members turn their lives around.

The 17-year-old student—an at-risk teen—primarily raised by his grandmother because his mother was incarcerated didn’t trust ‘Rev’ at first but soon shared his personal struggles. Rather than help the boy, ‘Rev’ recruited him to sell marijuana.

For additional funding and to comply with the Safe and Drug-Free Schools Community Act (SDFSCA), schools in the US have adopted drug and violence prevention programs for students, teachers, staff, and parent education. Programs vary from school to school.

If staff alcohol and/or drug related issues occur, the school district would also utilize employment contracts, school board policies, and bargaining unit contracts to take appropriate action.

The School Principal

Her crime occurred on her own time. However, her actions might make you question her character while on duty. Generally speaking, school employees—similarly to law enforcement and emergency response personnel—should set an example of high moral standards both on and off duty.
