A Complete Senseless Act

Writer: Robin LyonsRobin Lyons

Have you ever been in a situation when money is tight and you’re not sure how you’ll be able to pay your rent? I have. The two young men—brothers—in this true crime were financially strapped and unsure what to do about their rent payment.

Instead of telling their 76-year-old landlord about their predicament, they concocted a plan to lure the property owner to their apartment under the pretense of a plumbing leak. According to the man’s son, his father wouldn’t hesitate to show up and be ready to fix a leak.

When the owner walked into the brothers’ apartment, the older of the two fell in behind the man and put him in a chokehold. He squeezed until the older man fell to the floor and died. I don’t understand what the brothers thought would happen next—that they’d live rent-free in the man’s complex forever?

With the man’s dead body in their apartment, they had to think quick what to do. A witness to the crime used one of the brothers’ cellphones to search how long it took for a body to decompose in sewer water. Unsure what to do, they stored the man’s body in their car for a day, then dropped him into the sewer near their apartment.

The landlord’s family reported him missing. While the family searched for their loved one, the brothers were using the man’s credit cards and spending the money they had stolen from him.

Two days after he’d gone missing, someone noticed the man’s vehicle with no license plates. After one month of searching, a search team found the man’s body in the sewer near the apartment building. Before the brothers’ arrest and after the search had found the man’s body, the two responsible for his death had the audacity to hug the man’s son and give their condolences.

The authorities arrested the brothers, and the judge denied them bail.

Almost six years later, the brothers faced the jury’s verdict at their murder trial—GUILTY.

The judge sentenced the 28-year-old brother who had lured the landlord to the back of their apartment to show him the ‘leak’ 47 years in prison. The judge sentenced the 31-year-old brother who performed the fatal chokehold to 45 years in prison.

News outlets reported, the son said,

“At the end of the day, this was really just a complete senseless act against somebody, that, if you asked him for all the money in his pocket, would have given it to them.”
