A Senseless Crime

Like many older people, the 57-year-old victim in this true crime worked nights to supplement his family income. He was married with two children. He enjoyed delivering pizza and the social aspect of the job.

On his last night, at around 10:30 pm, a caller ordered a pizza for delivery. When the delivery man arrived at the location, he found the owner of the property had let it go into uninhabited ruin. An assailant attacked him on the sidewalk and left him for dead as he drove away in the delivery man’s vehicle.

The husband and father died a short time later in the hospital. When the authorities went through his belongings, they found he had about $400 in his wallet. Because the assailant ditched the stolen car, hadn’t taken the delivery man’s money, and wasn’t talking, the motive remains unknown.

Investigators linked the suspect’s phone to the original pizza order and surveillance video caught him carrying the pizzas shortly after the attack. Later, they found a weapon in the suspect’s possession that matched ballistics on the murder weapon.

The suspect chose a jury trial. They found him guilty on all charges. A judge sentenced the 35-year-old man to 63 years in prison.

I can’t help but wonder what this was about. Killing for the fun of it? For free pizza? A gang initiation? Was he on drugs, making no reasoning applicable?

A prosecutor associated with the case said,

“It’s hard to put into words the senselessness of this crime.” The victim was a family man who wanted to provide extra financial support for his family.”
