Irreconcilable Differences

If you’ve ever fallen out of love with someone, then you know the heart wants what the heart wants. As you navigate married life, both people mature, change, interests may differ—marriage takes work. But sometimes the differences are simply irreconcilable. That may have been what was happening in this case.

And typically, when differences become irreconcilable, one party isn’t ready for the relationship to end.

After 22 years of marriage, I’m sure the wife in this true crime never imagined her husband would do to her what he did. Mix in some alcohol and you have the makings for a deadly evening.

The husband found his wife at the local bar in their small town with a census in 2020, showing 830 people. It may have been a small town with a small-town bar, but like many businesses—big and small—they had security cameras inside and out.

The bar’s security cameras recorded the husband’s actions. He went into the bar, sat beside his wife and had a brief conversation. Then he went to his vehicle, retrieved something, went back into the bar, sat next to his wife again. He turned and shot his 49-year-old wife in the head and then shot the 43-year-old bartender, placed his weapon on the bar, and left.

Calls went into the emergency operator describing the shooter and his vehicle. Officers apprehended him a short time later.

After many months awaiting trial. At trial, during cross-examination, the man accused of murder laid blame for his actions on his wife—in short, he said, “She had told me she wasn’t going home with me that night, she was going home with the bartender.”

The jury found the 49-year-old man guilty of two counts of deliberate homicide and use of a weapon in a violent crime. They sentenced the man to 140 years in prison. He’ll be eligible for parole after serving 50 years.

At his sentencing, victims made statements. One of their adult daughter’s said her father was a narcissistic person, and she didn’t feel safe with him in the world.
