Ongoing Arguments

Writer's picture: Robin LyonsRobin Lyons

It’s one thing to have your loved one snoring and disturb your sleep, but when your bedroom shares a wall with your neighbor’s bedroom and your neighbor snores so loud it keeps you awake, what do you do?

The neighbors in this true crime, two single men—one living with his mother—had been arguing about one man’s snoring and getting into verbal matches for a year and a half.

A District Attorney associated with the case said about the two men,

“The two were known to police due to ‘ongoing arguments.’”

On the day the arguing reached the crescendo, the neighbor who lacked sleep because of his neighbor’s snoring went next-door to the man’s home—it was dinnertime.

He yanked off the front window screen, opened the unlocked window and began yelling at the man. They continued arguing for about twenty minutes. The aggressor had calmed down and even offered to help pay for corrective surgery for the man’s sinuses to help resolve the snoring.

The man who’d been peacefully eating dinner when the neighbor interrupted didn’t believe the offer of help. When he opened his front door to shake hands with the man, he held a knife and stun-gun at the ready concealed under a blanket he’d tossed over his arm. He admitted to wanting the element of surprise.

He opened his door, greeted his 62-year-old neighbor, then repeatedly stabbed him. The injured man staggered to the front yard to collapse. His attacker called 9-1-1 and said he’d stabbed his neighbor. The injured man didn’t survive the attack.

Later, the attacker told law enforcement that he didn’t believe his neighbor intended to work out the problem. He also said the man had not exhibited angry or volatile behavior when he opened his door.

Rather than go to trial for third-degree murder, the 55-year-old man who snored too loudly pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter. The court sentenced him to less than two years in the county jail and three years of probation after released.

Does The sentence seem adequate to you?
