I’m sure that, like me, you know someone who becomes an angry drunk when they’ve consumed too much alcohol. It may be a factor in this true crime.
The 33-year-old woman and the 30-year-old man had been dating for nine months and lived together in a rental apartment along with a third roommate.
After the three roommates spent a night drinking, the female scream awakened the single roommate. When he ran to the shared living room, she was cradling her boyfriend, who was bleeding severely. He called an ambulance.
Law enforcement and medics arrived within five minutes. The medics transported the boyfriend to a hospital, where he died. Law enforcement stayed behind to question the girlfriend and the roommate because the boyfriend had suffered a gunshot wound to his back.
The roommate told the police that when he ran into the living room, his bleeding friend told him. “The b…. shot me in the back.” He accounted for the evening—they were all drinking then he went to bed. The girlfriend couldn’t remember much. She claimed they’d fought. She feared for her life when he strangled her. She had bruising on her knuckles and right hand, but no marks on her neck and no petechiae in her eyes (a result of obstructing the jugular veins).
A gun was in plain view when the police arrived. They learned the gun belonged to the girlfriend. During the investigation, a friend of the girlfriend told law enforcement that when she drank, she became a monster—like she flipped a switch. She’d scream and throw things. She also said,
“They seemed like the perfect couple.”
The girlfriend’s case went to trial, and a jury found her guilty of second-degree murder. A judge sentenced her to 40 years in prison less the time served awaiting trial.
